2017 Fall 500 Challenge

Sunday school will again be sponsoring the Fall 500 Food Drive

to benefit our local food pantry.

They will be gathering food staples

November 5th – 26th

and giving us updates each week during the service.

The kids really learn through this “hands on” experience.

When at the store, be sure to buy extra for this mission of our Sunday school! Thanks!

2013 Food Pantry Challenge

Sunday School Fall 500:

Once again, the challenge is on to collect 500 items for the less fortunate in our community.  This year, we have a “head-start”, as we collected 140 toothbrushes, toothpaste & floss for HEADSTART preschool programs in 5 counties.  Rachel  Luers spearheaded this collection as part of a community outreach project she’s working on in her nursing classes, as she works toward her RN.  Now we need 360 food, personal care products and/or laundry products to reach our goal by Sunday, November 24.  The Sunday School is asking both our churches to help us reach this goal.  Canned fruit is the canned food item in most need.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.  Matthew 25:35

On December 8, we will help pack food baskets at the Food Pantry, 1-3 pm.  Sunman Food Pantry expects to give out about 200 food baskets this year.  Looking for something special to do during the holidays?  It’s right here, literally, in our own back yard!  Families are welcome (and encouraged) to help.  Children 9 & up can come on their own.  Those under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Update:  As of November 24, we had reached – and far exceeded – our goal.  692 food & personal care items were collected at St. Jacob’s and St. John’s!!  Wow!  Thank you to all who helped achieve this goal!  What a great way to start the Advent season!

Pantries in need of assistance

The Herald-Tribune

Even though the Sunman Food Pantry is usually just open Saturdays, co-coordinator Sandy Wagner met a woman there Wednesday after receiving an urgent phone call from a pastor and many jobs available, here you can get tips for job hunting and volunteer jobs.

The disabled client asked her, “‘Will we be able to have any meat for supper tonight?’ The family has never come to the food pantry before, but this month they are in dire need.”

“Families are having it rough right now because there’s not a lot of work in this area,” explains community service specialist Sue Felton, who operates Brookville’s  Southeastern Indiana Economic Opportunity Corp. Food Pantry.

“The need is just unbelievable,” agrees Bill Warren. The Ripley County Food Pantry president says six years ago 60 families were visiting his facility, but now “we’re approaching 400 families a month.”

“A lot of people are running out of their unemployment. Others run out of food stamps by the end of the month,” Felton points out.
